On 8 March 2002, the Spanish cabinet gave the go-ahead for the Vallès Synchroton project, an initiative spearheaded by Ramón Pascual, Head of the Department of Physics at the UAB. Linked to the UAB's Institute for High-Energy Physics, the Synchrotron Light Laboratory has been working on the project for over ten years. The Synchrotron is a large particle accelerator in the form of a ring with a 250 metre perimeter, and will enable researchers to study the microscopic properties of materials that are important for both basic and applied research, as well as for biomedical research and in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries, to name but a few. The Vallès Synchrotron will be located in an area near to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, on land belonging to the Vallès Technological Park. The installations are due to be completed around 2008. More information about the Vallès Synchrotron |
